22 October 2020
I really hope that you have been able to keep safe and cope with the challenges of recent months. Who would have believed we would still be battling the Coronavirus as we approach Christmas? What a year it has been!
There have been some memorable highlights that stick in my mind, such as clapping for our NHS heroes on a Thursday evening, and we are delighted to include in this issue a selection of amazing poems that YOU have written during lockdown. I’ve found it hugely heart-warming to read about how you have continued to support each other during these unusual times; still finding ways to celebrate events, such as VE Day and special birthdays, whilst following social distancing guidelines.
My outstanding positive memory of 2020 will be that of being inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore. Following his hip operation, he decided to walk up and down his garden in the hope of raising £1000 for the NHS before his 100th birthday – but he ended up raising over £33 million instead! Watching him receiving his Knighthood from the Queen in the grounds of Windsor Castle brought a lump to my throat – because Her Majesty and Sir Tom are both such exceptional and inspirational human beings, giving us all hope, renewed energy and positivity as we all get a bit older!
As we approach the winter it is even more important that we stay safe and well – never has eating healthily and regularly exercising been so crucial. So, we have included in this issue lots of healthy recipes and some exercises to keep you strong and fit. We have also uploaded a selection of filmed mini-workouts to the FirstPort website, which you can watch here.
We love reading your stories so please keep them coming.
With all good wishes,
