As part of my two-week internship with FirstPort, the residents of Compton Court in Southbourne welcomed me to join them for their coffee morning so I could find out what it’s really like to live in their community.
Inez, has lived at Compton Court for 15 years and commented “I always feel safe, with the Development Manager and general security across the development. Everyone looks out for each other.”
By contrast Josie, only moved in six days ago, and is already enjoying development life, commenting: “Everyone has been so welcoming, and I felt at home straight away. I am so lucky to be here.” Josie’s daughter, Alison, added: “I am so relieved how smoothly the move went. It feels like a fancy alternative to a student dorm. I think mum will be very happy here.”
Patrick is one of only three men to reside at Compton Court and said: “I don’t mind being outnumbered by the ladies – I really enjoy it. I organise a card’s night every Thursday which is a good laugh and brings everyone together.”
Another resident, Val commented: “My only regret is not doing it sooner. After initial feelings of uncertainty when I first moved in, the welcoming environment and atmosphere of the development changed my opinion.”
Louise is the youngest resident at Compton Court, aged 63, and still works two days a week. She said: “I’ve made so many friends here. There’s a group of us that regularly socialise either in the lounge or in the garden having a glass of wine. We all help each other. Recently I had an accident which meant I was not very mobile, and everyone rallied around to help me round the clock.”
Lynne, author of the poetry book entitled ‘Feelings of Life: In Rhyme,’ has been a resident at Compton Court for nearly three years. She said: “I love it here. It’s a good area with great accessibility. It has recently been painted, and it looks very well-kept”
Sonia moved to Compton Court from a large home five years ago and commended: “I feel secure. At the beginning, I was uncertain; but little by little, you get used to the people and the benefits of seeing them.”
Compton Court’s longest-residing resident concluded: “It’s a very safe environment. I feel comfortable here and have done for the last 22 years. It’s why I haven’t left.”
